Welcome to the Piranha Club

One line

A narrative Grand Prix racing management simulation spanning twenty-one seasons, 1980–2000.

Short description

Welcome to the Piranha Club puts you in charge of a Grand Prix racing team for twenty-one seasons, from the ground-effect era through the turbo wars to the corporate consolidation of the late nineties. Hire drivers, choose engines, decide what your car is going to be, and answer to the people paying for it — across hundreds of written events that branch on what you have actually done.

Long description

You are a team principal in 1980, handed a small operation and a season you are probably not ready for. Over the next two decades you build a car every winter, sign drivers who have their own ambitions, court sponsors who want results before they will pay, and manage the manufacturers, patrons and boards whose money makes the whole thing possible.

The paddock has a long memory. Engineers, drivers and rivals track how you have treated them, and it surfaces years later in who returns your call. Three scenarios each set a different problem: a British independent with clever cars and no money, a French manufacturer programme with an Italian patron and an identity crisis, and an American corporate team with a dated car and a boardroom full of opinions. Sixteen endings are possible. Several of them are failure.

Game art

Key art for Welcome to the Piranha Club: a team principal watches a Grand Prix car in the pit lane. The team headquarters overview for Chambers Racing in 1995, showing championship standings and the next race on the calendar. A race result screen after the Brazilian Grand Prix, with a retired car burning at the trackside and its driver walking away. A story event weighing up a water-cooled brakes loophole, with engineers arguing either side and two replies to choose from. A budget warning showing a shortfall against costs, offering the choice to race anyway, review the budget, or take an emergency loan. The paddock screen listing rival teams, their engines and their driver line-ups. An end-of-season summary for 1995, showing the points scored and where the team finished in both championships. Two drivers disputing an incident at a hairpin, with three replies for the team principal to choose between.
